Surgery
If diet and lifestyle changes, drug therapy or other treatments don't relieve your signs and symptoms, your doctor may recommend surgery.
Surgery can often eliminate ulcerative colitis. But that usually means removing your entire colon and rectum (proctocolectomy). In the past, after this surgery you would wear a small bag over an opening in your abdomen (ileostomy) to collect stool. But a procedure called ileoanal anastomosis eliminates the need to wear a bag. Instead, your surgeon constructs a pouch from the end of your small intestine. The pouch is then attached directly to your anus. This allows you to expel waste more normally, although you may have as many as five to seven soft or watery bowel movements a day because you no longer have your colon to absorb water.
If you have surgery, your doctor may discuss whether an ileostomy or an ileoanal pouch is right for you. Between 25 percent and 40 percent of people with ulcerative colitis eventually need surgery.

The story of your ordeal and two surgeries is inspiring and reminded me of my Ulcerative Colitis surgeries 24 years ago. I found your blog doing a Google search on the disease, and I too was very happy with my surgery, though I had to have three. I live in Michigan and went to the Cleveland Clinic and was very impressed with the doctors and the nurses. They treated the whole patient, that just physical but the mental and social aspects.
Though I have occasional problems I believe it was the best option for the life style I wanted, an active one. I was 34 years old when I had my first emergency surgery, and now at the young age of 58, have lost 45 pounds to be at my ideal weight and exercise most days.
I wish you well, as you are a very handsome young man that has gone through too more than one should at such a young age.
Hi Chad, My 16 old son is going through a tough time. He was healthy as can be till Feb 2010, he was diagnosed with UC early March and had his colon removed mid April, he had many complications and was in the hospital for 6 weeks. A few months after he left the hospital he was doing pretty good went from 118lbs to 135lbs (he is 6'). Then he had a blockage lost alot of weight but got back up to 130lb before his J-pouch surgery. He just had j-pouch in October he had a leak where pouch connects to rectum, had emergency surgery, he is down to 115-118lbs and feeling nausea alot. Our son is 16 years old and he too has ulcerative colitis and is a junior here I Texas. He has been through all of the meds. We are meeting with three surgeons locally next week to discuss the jpouch surgery. I am considering Mayo too. However, our son is not doing to great so we may run out of time to get something rolling with Mayo.
